Directions
Via Northbound I-405:
- Take Exit #23 for Bothell.
- Follow the ramp which becomes Highway 522 Westbound, then it becomes Bothell Way NE.
- Please note major revisions to the road last year; pay attention.
- Turn right onto NE 180th.
- Bothell High is on the top of the hill. Go straight at the stop sign and immediate right into parking lot.
Via Southbound I-405:
- Take Exit #26 (Bothell-Everett Highway).
- Turn right onto the highway.
- Turn right onto NE 188th.
- Turn left at the top of the hill onto 92nd Ave NE
- Bothell High is on the right, about a half mile further.
Take these directions with you on tournament day! Please arrive between 2:45 and 3:45 pm Friday.
Eligibility
Open to any student registered in grades 9-12 in Washington State.
Format
Five round Swiss system, computer paired, (no knockouts).
Three sections using NWSRS ratings published at www.ratingsnw.com:
- CHAMPIONSHIP:
Rated 1600 and over, and any other player desiring to play for the title of State Champion.
The championship section will also be USCF rated. See "Join USCF" below." - PREMIER: Rated 1200 - 1599, and any other player rated less than 1200 desiring the tougher competition.
- RESERVE: Rated 1199 and under only, and new, unrated, inexperienced players.
Note: The director reserves the right to change rating parameters to balance numbers in the sections.
Note: Players who may have received high first time and provisional ratings may request to play in the Reserve section. These requests will be granted or refused on an individual basis.
Note: During online registration, put C (Championship), P (Premier) or R (Reserve) before each player's name to indicate the desired section.
Join USCF
If you play in the Championship section you must be a USCF member. Other sections do not require USCF membership, although we recommend joining USCF for its many benefits.
To save time, WHSCA recommends you join USCF online at home before you arrive at the tournament.
Bring your USCF ID number for the Championship section; they will confirm your USCF membership is current at check-in.
- Regular Youth one-year membership (age 15 and uder) is $22.
- Regular Young Adult one-year membership (age 24 and under) is $26.
- Save time! Join USCF or renew at www.uschess.org.
WHSCA recommends that players in the Championship Section can save time by joining USCF online in advance. The tournament directors will confirm your current membership, so bring your USCF ID number to check-in.
Schedule
Please arrive between 2:45 and 3:45 pm on Friday January 31st.
All players check in by 3:45pm Friday. Players checking in after 3:45pm will risk forfeiting round one.
Friday rounds 4:15 pm, 7:45 pm
Saturday rounds: 9 am, 1 pm, 5 pm (these times are firm)
Time Control
90 minutes per player per game (Game/90 with 5-sec delay preferred). Recording is required.

Bring
We have a lot of chess sets and boards, but please bring clocks, writing utensils and chess sets for the skittles area.
Bring your USCF ID number if you're playing in the Championship section.

Awards
Winner of the Championship Section receives the title of High School Champion of the State of Washington. The state champion will receive $1,000 of monetary support from the Washington High School Chess Association and may receive some additional funds from the Washington Chess Federation to attend the Arnold Denker Tournament of High School State Champions.
An appropriate number of trophies will be awarded to individuals in each section. Players that score at least 3.5, but do not place high enough to earn a trophy, will be awarded a chess medal.
Note: Ties for first place in the Championship Section will be resolved later in the year by a G/90 playoff game.
If there is a tie for first place in the Premier or Reserve Section, it will be resolved in a speed chess playoff
(game in 3 minutes with a 2 second delay).
Entry Fee
$25 for the Championship section to be paid at check-in.
$15 for the Premier and Reserve sections to be paid at check-in.
ALL must enter in advance by online registration or email by Thursday, January 23th at 8:00 pm.
100% advance entry only.
No phone, fax or postal mail entries.
For each player entering please provide their first and last name with their NWSRS ID number. If the player is unrated or their NWSRS ID number is unknown, then you must indicate their school and the current grade the student is in.
When registering, put C (Championship), P (Premier) or R (Reserve) by each player's name to indicate the section.
Half Point Byes
One-half point bye available for Friday afternoon and/or evening if you can't make it both days; one-half point bye available for round 3 on Saturday morning. Only two half point byes available. Request for HPB must be made with advance registration or at check-in. No half point byes for rounds 4 and 5.
