2007 - 2008: The Top Ten in Each Grade in WA

I am doing this differently this year. In the past, to reach anywhere on these pages, players had to be a Washington resident and play a minimum of 15 NWSRS rated games last season, without exception. However, this year I have decided to honor those players who are highly rated, but for whatever reason, did not play the minimum of 15 games in the system. I still show the Top 10 as the players who have met the requirement, but show other Washington players who had the rating to qualify, but not the 15 games. (Total Games) = career games. (Games Year) = games played in 2006-2007 season. (Ratings for this list were closed August 3, 2007.)

Congratulations to the fine young players who made this list! We honor you. And congratulations to the many others who missed the list narrowly, and the many, many others who competed last year in this great game we all enjoy!

THIS IS A FULLY RESET LISTING FOR 2006-2007 done in preparation for the 2007-2008 season. ALL PLAYERS ARE LISTED WITH THEIR NEW 2007-2008 GRADES. (There may be some kindergartners who started competitive chess as pre-schoolers whose grades need to be reset. NWSRS RATING SYSTEM STATS AND ACTIVITY

At the end of last season we had reached 12,385 players, higher than the previous year due to the expansion of the system. This August the Washington Scholastic Rating System was reset as follows: (1) Graduated seniors were advanced to “adult” status. (2) A total of 2,756 “inactives” (a complicated function where a combination of number of games in the system, and length of time since last activity was used to determine inactive status) were removed. (3) All grades were advanced one level. (4) The "this year" games field was emptied. All USCF ratings were updated on July 23, 2007.

We start the new season with 9,629 rated scholastic players, 5,472 in grades 1-6, 3,391 in grades 7-12 and 766 adults. Last year we rated over 260 events and over 40,000 games.

Most of you know this has been a very difficult year for me with the death of my son, former HS State Champion Eric Winges, in December of 2006. I am greatly appreciative for all those of you who took the time and made the effort to express your sympathy for our loss. I remain committed to the Washington chess community and will continue to volunteer my time as your rating statistician. It is a pleasure to work with the Washington chess community. I work hard to try to keep the system running efficiently. Thanks for your help.
